Dance, a universal art form, has seamlessly intertwined with mythology, religion, and social life on a global scale. Not only has it enriched the tapestry of social interactions, but dance has also played an integral role in the ceremonial practices, rituals, celebrations, and entertainment that have marked human existence since the earliest civilizations. Stretching back to the dawn of society, dance stands as a timeless and vital element, shaping cultural dynamics and serving as a poignant reflection of the diverse narratives woven into the fabric of human history.
In the realm of dance, an inherent energy courses through the performers, guiding them beyond mere physical coordination, training, and choreography. The stillness of static movements captivates the dancers, drawing them into a mesmerizing trance where all senses are bewitched. Dancers move like puppets through their bodily gestures, yet with no strings attached to their bodies and no puppeteers above — temporary energy forms in perpetual motion. Until the performers reach a stage, a state of mind where they stop being just humans and become pure vehicles, where each movement of the dance is led by the unknown. As if the dance would open a door allowing the unknown to get in touch with the dancers, to become one with the dancers. Powerful waves of energy pulsate throughout their minds and bodies. Then the dance becomes the transition between the performers and the otherworldly realm, a way of communicating with what we can't see through what we can feel.
As a photographer deeply focused on the world of dance, my approach involves a unique technique that mirrors the essence of the dancers' connection with the unknown. I built up this project by photographing dances across diverse countries and cultures, employing slow shutter speeds, deliberately moving the camera to follow the dancers or adjusting lenses through zooming in or out, and panning while capturing the photo. In the midst of the dance, my goal is to freeze those ephemeral moments of transition on a still image—the instances where the unknown seamlessly merges with the dancer. Through intentional blurs and dynamic compositions, I aim to encapsulate the very essence of the dance, portraying it as a powerful conduit between the tangible and the otherworldly. These photographs become a visual testament to the captivating energy and profound harmony achieved during these transcendent moments within the dance.
